The Forager's Calendar

Why did I make this tool?

As I got more and more into foraging, discovered new species, and started gathering year-round I was consistently frustrated with one big thing

I had so many species that I was keeping track of that I constantly felt overwhelmed by every new season and kept on missing harvest windows! So, I began to record when various wild foods would be at their peak. This started with a few plants, then I spent a lot of time looking at fruit trees, and finally nut trees.

I created a calendar and foraging checklists for the things that I did not want to miss in each season. I quickly came to rely on this tool that I had made! I knew that I eventually wanted to offer this valuable tool to all of you as well, but I felt like just dropping a static photo wouldn’t do it justice. I wanted to be able to present it as an interactive guide that came with context and important information for each species.

I searched for a solution some time and continued to work on the Calendar and Knowlegebase attached to it. Finally, I find something that worked. With a little bit of development skills, it was done!

Today, I’m so happy to get to share it with you!

Who is this for?

This guide and calendar covers species mainly in eastern North America. In addition, though some species may be found in the Rockies or on the West Coast, the timings may not translate quite as well.

Nonetheless, if you are on the West Coast, you may find the information on various species in the Knowledgebase helpful. You can always use your free trial to see if it will be helpful to you!

So, if you are a forager anywhere from a beginner to an advanced skill level, I think you’ll find a lot of value from it! (I use it myself every day!)

Why is it valuable?

Elderberry is so easy to find when flowering!

One of the most difficult aspects of foraging is timing. Knowing when different species are in their prime state is half the battle. There is nothing more frustrating than learning about a cool new edible species only to find out that you just missed the season for it and have to wait an entire year for the next window!

With my foraging calendar, this will be a thing of the past! Not only will you get timing information on the windows for gathering things like wild fruits and vegetables, but also when you can find notable characteristics like flowers in bloom, which will allow you to scout for new locations with ease.

Is the Calendar just a picture?

I could just take a picture of a calendar with various species and call it a day, but honestly, there are a lot of options like that out there, and I wanted to give you something new!

My foraging calendar is part of a full website application that is connected to my personal Foraging Knowledgebase! Each species in the calendar is connected to additional pages on how to scout, identify, and use them!

There is loads of information on important topics like safety and distinguishing from toxic lookalikes.
